What is Fake News?

The FREEDOM project introduces viewers to the concept of fake news, which refers to false or misleading information presented as news, often with the aim to deceive, influence public opinion, or attract attention. Fake news can be found on social media, websites, and even in traditional media outlets.

A key distinction is made between:

  • Misinformation: false information shared without intent to harm.
  • Disinformation: deliberately false or manipulated content shared to mislead.

Together, they are known as information disorders.

Types of Fake News:

  1. Satire or Parody: Humorous or exaggerated content not intended to mislead, but often misunderstood (e.g., April Fools hoaxes).
  2. Fake Context: Real content shared with false or misleading background information.
  3. Fabricated Content: Completely invented stories made to look like real news.
  4. Misleading Content: Selective or out-of-context use of facts to distort a narrative.
  5. False Connections (Clickbait): Headlines or visuals that are sensational and don’t reflect the actual content (e.g., “You won’t believe this!”).
  6. Imposter Content: Using fake identities or logos to mimic trusted sources and mislead audiences.

The FREEDOM educational videos highlight how such content can cause confusion, fear, or manipulation, especially around critical topics like health, elections, or public safety.

Fake news affects everyone. By learning to recognize its forms, checking sources, and thinking critically, we can reduce its impact. The FREEDOM project encourages viewers to share this knowledge, stay alert, and explore more tools through its platform and social media.
